Columbia Gorge Paddle Challenge 2018

It was an awesome - and windy - few days in Hood River, OR for the 2018 Columbia Gorge Paddle Challenge. SIC Team athletes Seychelle, Jade Howson, Martin Vitry, Kody Kerbox, Keaton Rose, Zeke Rose, Riley Jaggi, Melene Jaggi, Slater Fleck and Jameson Roeber, arrived early in the week and had time to enjoy Hood River and prepare for the weekend with a few pre-race downwinders and paddle sessions with local Stoke on the Water ambassadors Joel Yang and Russel Peart. The team also had the opportunity to work with the Hood River Junior SUP athletes at the Big Winds JET training practice. The week was packed with downwind fun and team bonding at the SIC house leading up to the big weekend of racing.

Day 1 - Downwind Racing

Excitement was high on Saturday morning in anticipation for the event’s iconic Double Downwinder (2 back-to-back 8.0 mile downwinders). It wasn’t the windiest of conditions, but there was definitely enough wind for a fun and competitive race. Seychelle had a strong race on the RS 14’ x 23”, placing 6th overall for the women and bettering her position from last year by 5 places.

Jade Howson finished 10th overall, moving up 2 places from her 2017 finish.

Thanks to Big Winds, several other groms were able to race on SIC boards throughout the weekend, many of them earning spots on the podium!

In the Elite field, Seychelle had a stellar performance. Closely battling all-star competitors Shae Foudy (1st), Olivia Piana (3rd), and Fiona Wylde (4th) for the top spot, Seychelle (2nd) finished just behind Shae for a well-fought 2nd place. Teammate Jade Howson clocked in at just over 37 minutes, placing her in 12th in a stacked elite field of over 20 female racers.

Frenchman Martin Vitry grinded out in the men’s division, advancing after the first heat and digging his way to a 6th place finish in a highly competitive international field. Kody Kerbox advanced from the first heat as well, finishing 17th overall.
