''The Teahupo'o wave simultaneously embodies perfection and terror''

Joan Duru, a French professional surfer, ranked n°1 in France and ambassador for SIC Maui, shares his profound connection with this mythical wave.

During his month-long stay in Tahiti, where he received a warm welcome, the Hossegor surfer dedicated himself to daily training, preparing for the ultimate challenge of his career.

Amidst deep reflection and rigorous preparation for upcoming competitions, Joan discusses the joys and trials of surfing one of the world's most challenging waves. From his pivotal role in the French team to his aspirations for the approaching summer, meet a champion who finds his inspiration deep within the barrel.

What is your relationship with Teahupo'o? What makes this wave so unique?

"I have a deep love for the Teahupo'o wave; it's truly one of the most breathtaking waves in the world. I dedicated nearly a month to training there, striving to understand its nuances completely. In smaller swells, it's incredibly beautiful; in medium swells, it becomes perfect; and when it gets larger, it turns intimidating.

It's a majestic wave that poses significant challenges for surfers. Due to its various sections—inside and outside waves—its character changes with each swell, wind condition, and the reef's influence. Knowing where to position oneself is crucial. At the start of a heat, it's a fierce competition to secure the optimal position inside."

And Tahiti?

"I have a deep affection for Tahiti; I've made many friends here. Michel Bourez introduced me to this place during my early days on the World Tour. Knowing the waves here inside out, Matahi Drollet has been a great companion. The locals have been incredibly kind to me in the water.

The people of Tahiti are warm and welcoming; being here feels like home. The positive energy is palpable, and to top it off, the waves are perfect, and the food is amazing. It's a place where I feel truly uplifted. Unlike on the mainland, there's less pressure here, allowing me to focus on surfing and training."

What was your mindset before the big event?

"I'm thrilled to have qualified for the French surfing event in Tahiti—it's a major milestone. When I learned four years ago that it would be held in France, I knew it was a significant opportunity worth pursuing in my career.

I'm proud to represent France, especially Tahiti, which has fantastic waves. It promises to be an incredible event for the spectators."

A word about the team?

"We had a great experience at the ISA World Championships three months ago with the entire French team; there was a strong camaraderie. I'm the team captain by being the eldest, and my role is to provide guidance when needed and ensure smooth operations.

Kauli Vaast may be younger, but he's contributed immensely to the team. Johanne Defay and Vahine Fierro are incredibly talented, making our team very promising."

What are your preparations and ambitions for this summer?

"My goal is to bring home a medal, and I'm focused on achieving that. I'm grateful for the support from SIC, which has allowed me to prepare thoroughly without financial worries. I've been surfing extensively, and during lulls in the waves, I've been practicing foiling, which helps with cardio and leg strength. There's a perfect foiling spot next to Teahupo'o, making it ideal for training.

I'm naturally drawn to competition. Mental strength is most crucial when facing huge waves and pushing myself to the limit."
